RAISE YOUR ACT SCORE | ATTEND YOUR CHOICE OF UNIVERSITY | EARN SCHOLARSHIPS OF $1,000 to full ride

JOAN GEYER KALIHER

Getting a better ACT Composite is such a high stakes game these days. Your test result can determine which school you get into and whether or not you get a scholarship. Each college or university seems to have different requirements for admission and for scholarships. But, almost all of them require a minimum ACT Composite and minimum GPA in combination. Some also have additional requirements. For example, students may be required to show demonstrated experience in leadership, service, and/or school or community activity.

So, raising your ACT score as high as possible, along with maintaining a high GPA, will help you get into the college or university of your choice and may lower your college costs considerably through scholarship awards.

Even if you or your family have the financial resources to afford the high cost of college, wouldn't it be much better to save thousands of dollars by getting an academic scholarship?

If you or your family don't have the financial resources, wouldn't it be much better to qualify academically and financially to attend a good four-year college or university instead of attending a community college because of cost considerations?

You will have to check with admissions at each college you consider to understand what ACT composite & GPA requirements are. Although some colleges admit students with lower ACT composites & GPA's, selective Colleges & Universities require a 1160 - 1340 or higher; GPA's of 3.0 to 3.5+.

For scholarship requirements, check with the scholarship or financial aid departments at each college or university. Requirements vary all over the map, but in general they follow a pattern like this:

ACT Composite 23 - 26: Some academic scholarships are available starting at this SAT score range, depending on your GPA.

ACT Composite of 27 - 28: More scholarships are available, some partial and some full ride scholarships, again depending on your GPA at this ACT score range.

ACT Composite of 29 - 31: Even more scholarships are available, including many full ride packages. Some selective universities provide scholarships at this ACT score range when combined with a GPA of 3.5 or higher.

ACT Composite of 32 - 36: Full ride scholarships are offered at many colleges and universities with an ACT score in this range along with a GPA of 3.8 - 4.0+.

Sliding scales for colleges or universities scholarships are sometimes used. That is, if you have a very high GPA you can still get a scholarship with a lower ACT score. On the other hand, if you have a very high ACT composite, you can still get a scholarship even though you have a lower GPA.

Most colleges and universities, however, just have a minimum ACT score combined with a minimum GPA or High School rank as requirements for a scholarship award.

Here are a few examples:

Utah State has the sliding scale mentioned above. If you have a ACT composite of 19+, with a 4.0 GPA, GPA of 2.75 - 3.1 with a 36, you qualify for $15,000. 25+ ACT score and GPA of 3.15 - 4.0 scholar scholarship of $17,000 for the first year. If you have an ACT composite of 33+ with a 3.75+ GPA, or a 36 with a 3.75 GPA, you get 4 years of a full ride Presidential scholarship.

The University of Alabama offers out-of-state freshmen $8,000/yr. for an ACT score of 27 with a 3.5+ GPA. They offer $10,000/yr. for a 28 with a 3.5 + GPA, $15,000/yr. for a 29 with a 3.5+ GPA, and $24,000/yr. for a 30 - 31 ACT score and a 3.5 or higher GPA. $28,000 is awarded 3.5+ and 32 - 36 ACT score.

Auburn University offers academic scholarships to non-resident freshmen of $8,000 - $18,000/year based on a minimum 28 on the ACT & a GPA 3.5+.

Arizona State offers with a ACT composite of 27+, and a GPA of 3.0 - 3.7, $10,000 Dean's scholarship or $12,000 Provost scholarship.

The University of Missouri has a sliding scale for awards. $7,000 per year if you have a 23 - 25 with a GPA of 4.0+. With a 3.25 GPA, you will need 32 or higher on your ACT. $18,000 will be awarded with 27+ and GPA of 4.0+.

Boston University offers 20 Full-ride Trustee Scholarships with a ACT 33+ and GPA in the top 5% of your class. They offer Presidential Scholarship of $25,000 to incoming students with similar academics.

Michigan State University awards up to $5,000 with 3.1 - 3.5 combined with a ACT score of starting at 20 to 36. With a 4.0 and 26 - 27 ACT score, you may qualify for $15,000/year.

The University of Indiana has a variety of scholarship awards, including one that offers $500 - $3,000.00/year with minimum of 3.75 GPA and ACT score of 28+.Kelley Scholars - 10 awards, 3.9 GPA with 32 ACT score with amounts varying for in-state only.

The University of Iowa awards a wide variety of scholarships, including Presidential Scholarships that award $10,000 up to $20,000 per year if you have an ACT score of 32+ & a GPA of 3.8+ on a 4.0 scale.

It quickly becomes evident that a higher ACT test result can mean thousands of extra dollars in your pocket because you don't have to spend them on college costs.
